The Best Time to Visit Rarotonga - An Honest Guide
From Jo and Rick at Serenity Villas, on Rarotonga's Sunset Coast
PLANNING YOUR TRIP
Every travel website will tell you there's a "best" time to visit Rarotonga. The honest answer, after nearly a decade of welcoming guests year-round, is that it depends on what you're after — and that Rarotonga is genuinely good at almost any time of year.
Here's what we actually tell our guests when they ask.
The dry season — May to October
This is Rarotonga's most popular window, and for good reason. The weather is reliably warm and sunny, humidity drops, and the trade winds keep things comfortable without being cool. It's also whale season — humpback whales pass through Cook Islands waters any time from around July through to October, and from our beachfront on the sunset coast. Some years the first sightings come as early as June; others they're still passing through in November. There are no guarantees with wildlife, but the window is long and the sightings can be extraordinary. And the lagoon is still warm (around 24C).
If you're planning your first visit to Rarotonga and want the most reliably settled weather, May through September is a safe bet. Be aware that this is also when Serenity Villas tends to be booked up a few months in advance — if you have specific dates in mind, booking ahead is wise.
The wet season — November to March
Don't write off the wet season too quickly. Yes, Rarotonga receives more rainfall between November and March — but the showers here are typically short and sharp rather than the grey, all-day drizzle of a New Zealand winter. An hour of rain, then sunshine. Repeat.
The advantages of visiting in the wet season are real: fewer visitors and a quieter island. The sunsets are spectacular, and the gardens at Serenity Villas are at their most lush and green. If you don't mind the occasional shower and value having the island a little more to yourselves, it's worth considering. February is our quietest month of the year and many accommodation and restaurant operators close to undertake maintenance and take a break.
The honest answer
Rarotonga in our dry season is warmer than New Zealand's or Hobart's winter, and our wet season is much warmer than Canada at Christmas or a Colorado winter — and considerably more affordable too. The Cook Islands dollar goes further than you might expect, flights from North America via Honolulu on Alaska Airlines are well established, and December through February here is genuinely lush, warm, and quiet. Our large pool is temperature controlled to maintain a consistent 28/29C regardless of the season.
The best time to visit Rarotonga is whenever you can get here. The best time to book Serenity Villas is before someone else does.
