The legend

 

Black Rock — Tuoro in Cook Islands Māori — holds deep significance for the people of Rarotonga. According to Cook Islands legend, this is the departure point for the spirits of the dead on their journey to the afterlife. It is a place where, it is said, the veil between worlds is thin.

We share this not to be dramatic, but because understanding it changes how you experience the place. There's a stillness at Black Rock that's hard to explain purely by geography. Knowing the legend, it starts to make sense.

 

The snorkelling

The water at Black Rock is typically clear and sheltered, protected from the prevailing winds in a way that keeps visibility consistently good — only a significant storm will change that. The lagoon here is home to a colourful variety of tropical fish, and the rock itself creates an interesting underwater landscape to explore.

It's rarely busy — a couple of families at most on a typical day, and often quieter than that. The pace here matches Rarotonga itself: unhurried, gentle, and easy to lose track of time.

 

A few things to know before you go

Reef shoes are provided at Serenity Villas — wear them. Entry into the lagoon is much more comfortable with them on. Reef-safe sunscreen is important here as everywhere on the island — please leave the standard formulas at home.
