What to Pack for Rarotonga - and What to Leave at Home

​After welcoming guests from New Zealand, Australia, and beyond for nearly a decade, we've seen it all — overstuffed suitcases full of things that never left the villa, and guests quietly wishing they'd remembered the one thing that would have made their first day easier.

Here's our honest, practical packing guide for Rarotonga. Short answer: pack light. Long answer: read on.

 

What you don't need to bring 

 

If you're staying at Serenity Villas, we've already thought of the basics. Reef shoes, beach towels, snorkelling gear, and hairdryers are all provided — so leave those at home and save the space.

Formal clothes? Leave them too. Rarotonga is genuinely relaxed. Guys, you'll need a clean shirt, ladies maybe a second layer for dinner in case the evenings are cooler. And something to cover your shoulders while in town or if you attend a church service.

And don't stress about books — we have a guest library at Serenity Villas where you're welcome to swap and browse. Arrive with one favourite and leave with something new.

 

What to bring

 

Reef-safe sunscreen — this one matters. Rarotonga's lagoon is a living ecosystem, and standard sunscreens containing oxybenzone and octinoxate are harmful to coral. Reef-safe options can be hard to find locally and expensive when you do, so bring enough from home.

Insect repellent — evenings on the verandah are one of the great pleasures of a Rarotonga stay. A good insect repellent means you can enjoy them uninterrupted. Again, bring from home rather than relying on finding it locally.

A light cardigan or wrap — days are warm, but evenings on the west coast can carry a gentle breeze off the ocean. A light layer makes sunset watching considerably more comfortable.

A reusable water bottle — at Serenity Villas, triple-filtered, UV-treated water is available throughout the property, so you can refill freely and skip the plastic bottles entirely.  A good reusable bottle means you're sorted from the moment you arrive.

Any medications you rely on — Rarotonga has a pharmacy, but the range is limited compared to what you'd find at home. Bring a full supply of anything you take regularly, plus basics like pain relief, antihistamines, and any stomach remedies you might need.

Something for the local schools (optional, but always appreciated) — if you'd like to give something back during your visit, consider packing a few simple school supplies — pens, pencils, notebooks, colouring supplies or even a sports ball. Rarotonga's local schools welcome donations, and it's a small gesture that means a great deal to the community. We're happy to help pass them on if you'd like to donate during your stay.

One final tip

Leave a little room in your bag for the journey home. The Cook Islands has beautiful locally made jewellery, weaving, and art — and the island's markets are worth a browse. You'll want space for something to take home.
