Things to Do in Rarotonga for Couples - From the Sunset Coast

From Jo and Rick at Serenity Villas, on Rarotonga's Sunset Coast

FOR COUPLES

Rarotonga is a small island — you can drive the entire coast road in under an hour. But don't let the size fool you. For couples, it offers an almost perfect balance of doing nothing, and doing something when the mood takes you.

Start with doing nothing

This sounds obvious, but it's worth saying: one of the best things about staying on Rarotonga's sunset coast is how little you actually need to leave. At Serenity Villas, a genuinely good day might look like this — a morning swim in the lagoon, back to the pool, lunch on the verandah, an afternoon in the hammock or on the loveseat in the pool hut, a slow BBQ as the sun goes down, and cocktails from the Anchorage Restaurant & Bar next door to finish the evening.

That's a full day. And it's a very good one.

On the water

The lagoon directly in front of Serenity Villas is excellent for snorkelling — tropical fish, warm water, and easy entry straight from the sand. Reef shoes are provided, so you're in the water within minutes of the mood striking.

For something more structured, Rarotonga has two excellent lagoon tour operators running glass-bottom boat and snorkelling tours — both are well regarded and worth doing at least once. Ask us when you arrive and we'll point you in the right direction.

Kayaks are available on-site for guests who'd prefer to explore our front yard at their own pace.

Black Rock beach

A short stroll along the beach from Serenity Villas brings you to Black Rock — one of Rarotonga's most loved snorkelling spots and a place of significant cultural importance to the Cook Islands people. It's worth the walk, and the snorkelling around the rock itself is spectacular on a calm day.

Exploring the island

Catching a bus, hiring an e-bike, renting a scooter or small car and driving the 32km coast road is a classic Rarotonga experience — and one of the best ways to spend a morning or afternoon together. Stop wherever it looks good for a swim. Wind direction affects the lagoon and which side of the island is calmest on any given day.

Muri Beach and lagoon

On the eastern side of the island, Muri Lagoon is one of Rarotonga's most photographed spots — calm, shallow, and beautiful. Worth a visit to see a different side of the island, and there are good cafes and restaurants nearby for a lazy lunch.

Island Nights

Most of Rarotonga's larger resorts host an Island Night — a traditional Cook Islands feast and cultural performance featuring dance, drumming, and local food. They vary in style and atmosphere, so ask us what's on during your stay and we can point you toward one that suits what you're looking for.

A special dinner out

Rarotonga punches well above its weight for food offerings considering we are a small blimp in a huge ocean. For a genuinely special dinner, Tamarind House, Anchorage Restaurant and Antipodes are consistently rated highly by our guests. If you're celebrating something significant it is advisable to book before you get here.

A couples massage

For something indulgent, a couples massage is worth booking ahead — several good therapists operate on the island. Ask us on arrival and we'll share our current recommendations.
